Luncheon Presentation: Doc Anna: Petticoat Doctor of the Everglades
February 19 @ 11:30 am - 2:00 pm$35.00
“If you’ve never heard the roar of a bull alligator and some night bird answer, you haven’t lived.” Dr. Anna Albertina Linstedt Darrow
Storyteller and Chautauqua Scholar Carrie Sue Ayvar will portray Dr. Anna Darrow, often known as simply “Doc Anner , Petticoat Doctor of the Everglades” to her patients. In 1909, only the second woman doctor in the state of Florida, Doc Anna was also an award winning painter as well as a pioneer physician. She traveled through the swamps and glades of Florida, braving alligators and venomous snakes to treat any and all who needed her help, no matter their color or background–from fishermen to trappers, Seminole Indians and even some of the dangerous outlaw gangs this state has ever seen.
Carrie Sue Ayvar
How is it that an Arabic surnamed, Eastern European Jewish girl from Pittsburgh, PA tells multicultural stories in Spanish and English?
Perhaps it is because she is a third generation award-winning storyteller who came of age in Mexico. Blending traditional, international and personal tales, bilingual storyteller Carrie Sue Ayvar takes her listeners on a journey into the imagination connecting people, languages and cultures through her stories that flow effortlessly between Spanish and English.
